How Let’s Have Kids! ends

The ending turns Emma and Phoebe’s pregnancy plan into a test of their lifelong friendship. Phoebe is pregnant while Emma is not, despite tracking ovulation and following fertility routines. Ben is tested and told his results are normal, so the episode never supplies a simple explanation for Emma’s lack of a pregnancy. Emma’s fear is that Phoebe will move to “Planet Kids” and leave their life behind.

That fear breaks through at Phoebe’s baby shower. Emma admits she lied when she promised to be “all-in”: watching the pregnancy from outside has made her feel lonely and excluded. Phoebe says she cannot enjoy it around Emma without guilt, but insists Emma’s lack of a pregnancy is not her fault. Emma concedes, and they do not speak for three weeks.

The birth and what it changes

The crisis peaks when Phoebe goes into labor and cannot reach Brian, who is in surgery after a construction-site accident. She drives to the hospital and calls Emma, who arrives to coach her through delivery. Emma manages the playlist, supports Phoebe through the pain, and stays when an epidural is no longer possible. Phoebe gives birth to a girl; she and Brian name her Lily Nora, after Emma’s mother. Brian arrives afterward and says the situation on his side was complicated, but everyone will be okay.

The birth does not erase the resentment, but gives their friendship a more honest shape. Emma helps Phoebe through life with Lily, including a meltdown over breast milk ruined when Brian leaves the freezer open. They admit how isolated they feel. Emma cannot understand pregnancy from a book, but she can show up; Phoebe says she needs her. Their “we are witches” joke confirms the bond survives.

By Lily’s one-year birthday, that promise has held. Emma checks a pregnancy test and says “Nope,” then jokes about drinking and reclaiming her quiet Sunday brunch. She and Phoebe remain close, but no longer pretend their lives must move in sync. The ending leaves Emma’s path—pregnancy, another route to parenthood, or neither—open. Friendship survives through candor and choosing to remain present, not identical milestones.
